Where can I find side rail hardware for a barrister's bookcase?

We bought a five piece sectional antique barrister's bookcase. As with every other barrister bookcase we've seen, the side "rails" are always missing.

An extensive web search for antique hardware has not come up with anything. We ordered brass custom cut, but it's just not the right size.

Can you lead me to a site? I can only find hinges and knobs at most antique hardware sites.

Thank you.

Asbestos testing?

Does anyone have a reccomendation for mail-in testing for asbestos? Underneath two layers of rolled insulation, we've discovered some blown-in insulation in our attic. Given the age of our house, we're concerned that it may contain asbestos. We were hoping to be able to mail off a small sample to get it tested. We've found several online, but would like to get some reviews and reccomendations. Any tips would be greatly appreciated, as we are avoiding the attic until we know.

Thanks!

roofer stapled instead of nail

I got a written bid for a roofer to nail on shingles. Instead he nailed and stapled. I have not paid him yet. He said he would come back and nail where there were staples and cement the shingles down. Would that be a mistake. Should I just ask for a reduction in the price and if so how much? Any advice is appreciated. I don't know what to do.

Propane vs. oil: thoughts?

The time has come to seriously consider the type of heating system that we install. We've received some good recommendations from our plumber, but the big choice comes down to propane or oil. We like the thought of being less oil-dependent, but propane isn't looking particularly economical.

Anyone have any thoughts or experience they are willing to share?

Creating a Bathroom from Thin Air

My boyfriend and I own an old house (1901) in Salt Lake City. We have four bedrooms in the upstairs, and there is a bathroom in the Master Bedroom, but it isn't accessible from any of the other bedrooms. So our guests have to walk all the way down the stairs if they need to use the bathroom in the middle of the night, and it's not very convenient. We do have a perfect little "nook" area upstairs that would be great for a bathroom, and I'm wondering if it is possible/how much it costs to put a bathroom where there is none. The area is above our living room. If we were able to do this we would want a toliet, sink, and a stall shower. Does anyone know if it's possible, and how much it might cost us? Also, would it improve the value of our house? Thanks!

popcorn ceiling removal and radiant heat coils

I'm in the process of purchasing a condo build in 1968 and I'm considering removing the popcorn ceilings to make it look more modern.

However, there are radiant heat coils in the ceiling. If I turn the electricity off first(!), are there any problems with squirting water on the ceiling and scraping? Could any damage happen to the heating? Anything else I need to consider? Thanks!

bathroom tile epoxy color selection

I am looking for tile epoxy for my bathroom. I don't like the almond color that the tile is. I would like a nice color selection to choose from. I only know of white and almond. Are there more colors out there other than these two? If so, where can I go to find them? Thanks.

1950's plastic tile - looking for a home

That's exactly what I mean! I'm restoring a 1917 bungalow, and I have a small bathroom worth of 1950's Homart plastic tile, in a salmon-pink colorway with black and green accent tiles. I've been very careful while removing it, so that it can be used by someone who wants it for 1950's house, but I have absolutely no idea how to go about finding that person.

Any ideas? I'd hate to throw this away if someone needs it.

Call for toilet reviews

I am about to start shopping for fixtures, faucets, and all that fun bathroom stuff for my 2nd bath. Although I love the Kohler Power Lite I installed in the master, I don't like that it's dependent on electricity to work.

I know a few of you have installed Totos, so I'd like to hear how you like it. Pros/Cons of the different models/flushing systems? Any others out there with low water usage and a powerful flush that I should consider?

Thanks!

owner builder concerns

I am considering being the general contractor on my own home. The trend of people that are doing this is increasing and it seems like a good way to save money. I found a great publication from an I.C.F. builder, Vortexx Building Company in Pennsylvania that deals with this. Does anyone know of a place for more information on being an owner/builder?
